Luis Gil struggles in season debut as Yankees get swept by Marlins (highlights)

The New York Yankees’ trip to Miami ended on a sour note Sunday, as a 7-3 loss to the Marlins completed a three-game sweep and capped an embarrassing weekend for the Bronx Bombers.

Making his long-awaited season debut, Luis Gil struggled with command from the start, falling behind hitters and pitching under constant pressure. The 2024 American League Rookie of the Year allowed three runs in the second inning on a pair of walks and timely Marlins hits, then exited in the fourth with two runners aboard. Both scored on Kyle Stowers’ three-run homer off Brent Headrick, putting Miami ahead 6-1. Gil was charged with five earned runs on five hits, walking four and striking out three in 3.1 innings.

Trent Grisham gave the Yankees an early spark, blasting a leadoff home run off Edward Cabrera in the first, his 20th of the season. He later added a walk, but Cabrera was dominant otherwise, allowing just one more hit, a Jasson DomĂnguez single in the fifth, while striking out seven over six innings.

Jazz Chisholm Jr., criticized after Saturday’s baserunning blunder, answered with a two-run shot in the seventh, his 19th of the season, to pull the Yankees within three, but the offense stalled from there. Ben Rice, Cody Bellinger, and Giancarlo Stanton went a combined 1-for-11, with Stanton’s infield single being the lone hit.

Next, the Yankees (60-52) will head to Texas to open a three-game series with the Rangers on Monday at 8:05 p.m. Max Fried will take the ball, looking to get New York back on track.
