Buffalo Bills running back James Cook was present but did not participate in Sunday’s mandatory practice at St. John Fisher University, marking his first absence from on-field work during his contract standoff.
Speaking briefly to reporters afterward, Cook offered little explanation, repeatedly calling the situation “business” when asked why he sat out, whether it was his choice, or if he planned to practice Monday. He declined to elaborate on negotiations, saying, “It ain’t no side, it’s just business.”
The Bills, who listed no injury for Cook, declined to comment on his absence, and his agent did not respond to a request for comment.
Cook, entering the final year of his rookie deal, has been seeking a raise that would place him among the NFL’s highest-paid running backs.
The 24-year-old had previously indicated he wanted to fully participate in training camp to support his teammates and avoid fines, despite unresolved talks.
