An inmate at Green Haven Correctional Facility stabbed a male officer and attempted to stab a female officer in a violent attack on July 21.
The incident occurred around 5:40 p.m. inside the maximum-security prison in Stormville. According to reports, a 42-year-old inmate grew agitated while approaching a female officer and suddenly pulled an object from his pocket. The officer activated her alarm and attempted to flee as the inmate charged at her with a weapon.
Another inmate stepped between them, preventing the initial attack. The officer fell while retreating and injured her knee. When backup arrived, the inmate ignored commands and remained aggressive. Officers used OC spray several times with no effect. The inmate then charged at a responding officer and stabbed him multiple times in the back before staff wrestled him to the ground and disarmed him.
The injured officer was treated for a puncture wound to his back, a laceration on his head, and shoulder pain. Both he and the female officer, who suffered swelling in her knee, were taken to Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital for further care.
A nine-inch icepick-type weapon was recovered at the scene. The inmate, convicted in Nassau County in 2015 for Robbery 2nd and Grand Larceny 4th, is eligible for parole in September. He has since been transferred to Shawangunk Correctional Facility.
“This is an inmate, who clearly has no intention of being rehabilitated,” said Joe Horacek, NYSCOPBA Mid-Hudson Region Vice President. “Prosecuting him will send a clear message that attacks on staff will not be tolerated.”
