Five harmful algal blooms have been confirmed along the eastern shore of Owasco Lake, just two weeks after similar sightings in Cayuga Lake, according to The Citizen. Health officials warn residents to avoid contact with the blooms, which can pose serious risks to people and pets.
The Owasco Watershed Lake Association called the situation disheartening, noting that the lake is vital for drinking water, recreation, and tourism. Despite a court order requiring updated watershed rules, the state is appealing and has delayed action.
Local leaders, including those from Auburn and Owasco, continue to push for stronger protections, saying current safeguards aren’t enough to keep the lake and water supply safe.
