Frustrated parents are pushing back against Gananda Central School District’s plan to merge sports programs with Marion due to shrinking enrollment, according to RochesterFirst.
The district, which has seen student numbers drop by over 25%, says the move—starting with soccer—is necessary to keep teams viable. But families say they were blindsided and worry the rushed decision could reduce playing opportunities and leave key questions unanswered.
Superintendent Shawn Van Scoy defended the move, calling it urgent and necessary. Parents, however, demanded more transparency, better communication, and a greater role in future decisions that could impact their children’s school sports experience.
