Hochul awards $25 million to modernize New York airports

Governor Kathy Hochul announced $25 million in state funding on Monday to upgrade safety and infrastructure at 16 public-use airports across New York, part of an ongoing effort to modernize transportation hubs and strengthen local economies.

The funding comes through the AIR NY Aviation Capital Grant Program and will support a wide range of projects, from snow removal equipment and hangar upgrades to security improvements and sustainable heating systems. Airports receiving the awards span every region of the state.

“Thanks to our historic investments, New York’s airports are soaring to new heights and invigorating their local communities with new opportunities for economic growth and tourism,” Hochul said.

This year’s major recipients include Syracuse Hancock International Airport and Buffalo Niagara International Airport, which will each receive $2.5 million. Other funded projects include geothermal systems at Ithaca Tompkins International, security upgrades in Plattsburgh, and maintenance facilities in the Finger Lakes.

“These AIR NY investments will help ensure that our local communities are able to make important improvements in the safety, security, and resilience of their airports,” said New York State Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez.

The AIR NY program prioritizes projects that improve public safety, operational efficiency, and environmental resilience. In 2023, it awarded $49 million to 36 airports statewide.
