Owego businesses suffer amid repeated Sunday blackouts

A string of unexplained Sunday power outages is frustrating Owego residents and costing local businesses thousands, according to WBNG. More than 1,000 Tioga County homes and businesses have lost power on three of the last four Sundays, despite calm weather.

NYSEG attributed the blackouts to heat, rain, and trees interfering with power lines on a south Owego circuit. Business owners like Sean Villanti of Ice Cream Works! have used generators to stay open, while others, including Owego Donut & Beer Co., have closed early multiple times.

In response, one business is launching a “blackout donut” to lighten the mood. Meanwhile, NYSEG says its vegetation team is working to fix the problem.
