New York law mandates cardiac plans in schools

A new state law will require all New York public schools to establish detailed cardiac emergency response plans, according to WIVT. Signed by Governor Kathy Hochul on July 24, the legislation aims to better prepare schools for life-threatening medical events.

Nicknamed “Desha’s Law,” the bill was inspired by a middle schooler who died after suffering cardiac arrest during a basketball game. Despite having an AED on-site, delays in accessing it proved fatal. The law mandates written protocols and regular training for staff.

Supporters, including the American Heart Association, say the law will save lives by ensuring schools are equipped to act quickly during cardiac emergencies.
