Mets roll past Giants for fifth straight win (highlights)

The New York Mets opened their West Coast trip in style Friday night, cruising to an 8-1 win over the Giants in San Francisco.

With the victory, New York extended its win streak to five and improved to 60-44, holding onto first place in the National League East, a half-game ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies.

New York wasted no time getting to Giants ace Logan Webb. Brandon Nimmo led off the game with a double and scored on a groundout by Juan Soto, followed by a Francisco Lindor single and stolen base that set up Pete Alonso’s sacrifice fly for a quick 2-0 lead. Lindor stayed hot at the plate, finishing 3-for-5 with a homer, double, and three runs scored.

Starter Clay Holmes battled through five innings, limiting the Giants to one run despite some early traffic. He tied a career high with 104 pitches, allowing six hits and a walk while striking out two. Holmes got big help from his defense, especially Alonso, who saved multiple throws at first base.

The Mets blew the game open in the fourth, highlighted by Nimmo’s two-run single and smart baserunning from Tyrone Taylor. New York’s bullpen closed the door from there, combining for four shutout innings, including three strikeouts from Jorge Castillo in the ninth.

The Mets tacked on two more in the ninth, capitalizing on a wild pitch and a Soto RBI single to seal the win.

Box Score

New York will look to clinch another series win on Saturday behind David Peterson, who faces off against Giants lefty Robbie Ray. The first pitch is scheduled for 9:05 p.m.
