The Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office and Ithaca Police Department issued a public advisory Thursday warning residents about unaffiliated Facebook groups that appear to falsely present themselves as official law enforcement resources.
According to officials, the groups—operated under the apparent alias “Molika Sable”—include Tompkins County Public Safety Information, Tompkins County Predator Alert, and Finger Lakes Region Predator Alert – NYSPA Charter 3. The agencies say one moderator uses the “Molika Sable” identity in a deceptive way that may give the illusion of multiple individuals behind the posts.
Authorities emphasized that neither “NYSPA” nor “SCS Group,” both referenced in the groups’ content, are recognized as official organizations in New York State. “These entities are not registered as businesses or nonprofit organizations in New York State, nor are they affiliated with the New York State government or any law enforcement agency,” the advisory stated.
While reaffirming support for free speech, officials urged residents to be vigilant. “We urge caution and encourage the public to critically assess the validity and source of information, particularly when it is presented under potentially false or misleading pretenses.”
The agencies also reminded the public that accurate and up-to-date sex offender information is available through their official websites, and that any allegations of sexual abuse are thoroughly investigated.
Residents with concerns about these groups or who believe they’ve been targeted are encouraged to contact local authorities through the provided police tip lines and reporting forms.
