ESPN nearing agreement to acquire NFL Network, Red Zone in major media move

ESPN and the NFL are closing in on a landmark agreement that could reshape the sports media landscape.

According to multiple reports, including The Athletic and Sports Business Journal, the Disney-owned network is in advanced negotiations to acquire NFL Media, a package that includes the NFL Network, Red Zone Channel, and rights to seven regular-season games. While no contract has been signed, NFL owners have been alerted that a vote may be required as soon as next month.

The potential deal, valued at around $2 billion, arrives as ESPN prepares to launch its direct-to-consumer streaming service this fall, priced at $29.99 per month.

Acquiring key NFL properties would provide a major content boost ahead of that rollout, strengthening ESPN’s NFL programming portfolio while potentially enhancing its bargaining power with cable and digital providers. The integration would also further extend the NFL’s reach across ESPN’s broad platform and deepen a relationship that began in 1987.

If approved, the transaction would require regulatory review, with implementation possibly taking up to nine months.
