Over 150 NY schools file cellphone ban plans

With the August 1 deadline looming, more than 150 school districts in New York have submitted plans to implement a new bell-to-bell cellphone ban, according to Spectrum News.

The policy, enacted this spring as part of the state budget, mandates that all public schools, charter schools, and BOCES restrict smartphone use throughout the entire school day. To aid districts, the state launched a website with toolkits, FAQs, and sample policies.

The measure aims to curb distractions in classrooms, but its rollout varies district by district. State officials say they expect more submissions ahead of the cutoff.
