Advocates fight Trump proposal to cut vet housing aid

New York housing advocates and House Democrats are warning that a proposed Trump budget request could jeopardize housing support for homeless veterans. According to Supportive Housing of New York, the plan would slash over $500 million by consolidating two federal programs into one emergency grant.

Leaders say the cuts would undo years of progress—New York has reduced veteran homelessness from 16% to just 1%. Congressman Pat Ryan, a veteran himself, blasted the proposal, calling it “devastating” and urging Trump to withdraw it. Republicans countered, saying the concerns are premature.

While Congress hasn’t finalized the 2026 budget, state officials worry even deeper cuts could come later. Lawmakers from both parties are now weighing how to balance spending with protecting critical veteran services.
