Forest Rangers respond to wildfires, rescues, and flash flooding

New York State Forest Rangers handled multiple emergencies across the state last week, including wildfires, wilderness rescues, and flood assistance, according to the Department of Environmental Conservation’s July 15 report.

In Essex County, Forest Ranger Black extinguished an unattended campfire at Split Rock Falls on July 8 before it could spread beyond pine duff. On the same day, Rangers used a helicopter hoist to rescue a 13-year-old camper with a leg injury near Wallface Mountain.

In Greene County, a 68-year-old hiker was treated for a head injury and escorted from Kaaterskill Falls after losing consciousness. Rangers and EMS also assisted a 31-year-old dehydrated hiker on Buck Mountain in Washington County.

Ulster County Ranger Franceschina responded to a 10-year-old at the Peekamoose Blue Hole who was found weak and dehydrated. The child was stabilized and transported by EMS.

A lightning-sparked wildfire in Chesterfield burned two acres before being contained on July 13. The operation involved six fire departments, Keeseville EMS, and seven Rangers.

Meanwhile, in Cattaraugus County, flash flooding on July 13 caused Cattaraugus Creek to rise three feet in minutes. Four adults swam across the flooded creek and were treated for minor injuries. Rangers helped them contact family after they lost belongings, including car keys.

The DEC urged New Yorkers to hike smart and follow fire safety precautions. For emergencies on state lands, call 833-NYS-RANGERS or 911.
