A cardboard fire at the Steuben County Landfill was swiftly contained Monday, according to first responders.
The blaze broke out in the landfill’s cardboard bay, but landfill staff used a water truck to suppress the flames before firefighters from Bath, Hammondsport, and Kanona arrived to fully extinguish it. Crews also pulled burning material into the open to aid the response.
Officials credited the landfill team and a local hauler with preventing major damage. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
