State Police issue over 10,000 tickets during July 4th crackdown

New York State Police issued more than 10,000 tickets and made over 200 DWI arrests during a statewide enforcement campaign over the July 4th weekend.

The STOP-DWI initiative ran from July 3 through July 6 and focused on impaired driving, speed enforcement, and distracted driving. Troopers made 210 DWI arrests and investigated 716 crashes, five of which were fatal.

Funded by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, the campaign included sobriety checkpoints, increased patrols, and targeted enforcement for drivers using handheld devices. Troopers wrote 10,497 tickets during the four-day operation.

Key violations included 3,508 speeding tickets, 1,061 seatbelt violations, 301 citations for Move Over Law infractions, and 258 distracted driving offenses.

The Thruway region led the state with 1,779 total tickets, including 31 DWI arrests and 794 speeding violations. In the Finger Lakes region, troopers made 12 DWI arrests and issued 1,051 tickets. The Western Hudson Valley recorded the highest number of DWI arrests with 33.

Last year, during the same period, State Police issued 12,951 tickets and made 335 DWI arrests—significantly higher totals compared to this year’s figures.
