Republicans in New York are doubling down on efforts to push President Trump’s latest tax and spending bill through Congress ahead of a looming deadline, according to Spectrum News. The legislation would cement portions of Trump’s 2017 tax cuts, scrap taxes on tips and overtime, expand the child tax credit, and raise the SALT deduction cap. GOP leaders argue the bill shields Americans from a potential 22% tax hike and offers major relief for working-class families.
Democrats are sounding alarms over deep cuts to Medicaid and SNAP, as well as new work requirements for public assistance recipients. Rep. John Mannion criticized the plan as harmful to rural hospitals and vulnerable communities, while Republicans claim it targets fraud and inefficiencies.
The bill, which also boosts defense and immigration funding, is projected to add $3.3 trillion to the federal debt. Yet supporters like Rep. Elise Stefanik say it’s necessary to preserve key benefits for eligible citizens.
