Airports across the Finger Lakes and Central New York are set to receive millions in federal funding to modernize infrastructure, replace aging equipment, and improve passenger safety and comfort.
Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand announced Friday that more than $40 million from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law will be distributed among 16 airports statewide. Among the biggest beneficiaries are the Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport, which will receive $6.37 million, and several smaller regional airports in Cortland, Oswego, Griffiss, Hamilton, and Canandaigua.
“This is a major investment in modernizing airports across our state,” Gillibrand said, pointing to upgrades that will “enhance safety and comfort for passengers” and support local economies. Rochester’s funding will go toward replacing vestibule doors, elevators, and the airport’s fire alarm system.
In Central New York, Cortland County/Chase Field Airport will receive $369,550 for new snow removal equipment, while Oswego County Airport will get $513,750 for the same purpose. Griffiss International Airport has been awarded $580,367 to reconstruct airfield signage and update navigational aids. Hamilton Municipal Airport will receive $190,935 to complete the interior construction of a new passenger terminal.
Canandaigua Airport in the Finger Lakes region will use its $320,150 allocation to rehabilitate pavement on site.
Schumer praised the funding as vital for both safety and economic growth. “New York’s airports are a gateway for commerce and our tourism industry and vital connectors for residents and visitors,” he said.
