Waterloo Rotary launches community battery recycling program

The Waterloo Rotary Club has teamed up with Seneca Meadows, Seneca County, and local scouts to expand battery recycling efforts across the Waterloo community, the club announced Friday.

The initiative began with student outreach at Skoi Yase and Lafayette schools, where Rotary members educated students and staff on proper battery recycling practices. Over 500 alkaline batteries have been collected and recycled so far, with financial support from Seneca Meadows.

Seneca County’s health department joined the effort by hosting a collection box at its headquarters, which the Rotary Club also manages. Scouting America Troop 174 recently signed on and will help drive summer participation at the Waterloo Rotary farmers market.

The troop will be stationed at the market on July 24 and August 21 to support the program. The market is held every Thursday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the House of Concern parking lot behind the Waterloo Village offices.
