Highway clerk retires after 40 years in Livingston County

After more than four decades of public service, a longtime fixture at the Livingston County Highway Department is closing the books on her career.

Kim DuBois, who began working as a part-time account clerk/typist in 1984, officially retired Friday from her position as senior account clerk. Her tenure spanned significant technological changes, leadership transitions, and the department’s move to its current home in Mount Morris.

“It was a perfect fit,” DuBois said, reflecting on her early days when the office relied on electric typewriters and carbon paper. She joined the team when it was still located on Route 15 in Conesus and comprised just three employees.

DuBois became full-time in 2004 and was promoted to senior account clerk/typist in 2008. Over the years, she managed a range of duties, including payroll, road project cost tracking, and overseeing the County’s fueling system. She also became the department’s unofficial “complaint department,” helping maintain what she called the team’s “happy mode.”

Highway Superintendent Jason Wolfanger praised her decades of dedication. “She has been a steadfast pillar of our team,” he said. “She will be truly missed by all, not just as an outstanding and dedicated employee, but as a good person and a great friend.”

DuBois credited her longevity to supportive coworkers, especially Administrative Manager Elaine Szoczei, her mentor and friend for nearly 30 years. “Elaine has been my rock here for more than 27 years,” DuBois said.

Now retired, DuBois looks forward to spending more time with her children and eight grandchildren, attending sporting events, and volunteering at the Livingston County Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation.

“Here I am with more than 40 years of public service with Livingston County, and so very thankful that I’ve been able to be at the Highway Department for all of them,” she said.
