Study: Ancient protein helps gut immune system tolerate friendly bacteria

Cornell researchers have discovered that immune tolerance to gut microbes depends on a bacterial-sensing protein called STING, previously known mainly for triggering inflammation, according to the Cornell Chronicle. The findings could lead to new treatments for inflammatory bowel disease.

The study showed that STING signaling in ILC3 immune cells helps the gut avoid attacking beneficial bacteria. Moderate STING activity promotes tolerance, but too much can destroy these cells, worsening inflammation. Tissue samples from IBD patients confirmed this imbalance.

Scientists believe adjusting STING levels or restoring lost immune cells could provide powerful therapies to manage chronic gut inflammation.
