Seneca Falls police to reward kids for helmet safety

This summer, kids in Seneca Falls might be stopped by police—not for breaking the rules, but for following them.

From June 30 to August 1, the Town of Seneca Falls Police Department will be issuing “Helmet Safety Citations” to children spotted wearing helmets while riding bikes, scooters, skateboards, or roller skates. These citations serve as reward vouchers and can be redeemed for small prizes, thanks to support from local businesses.

“It’s a positive citation that can be redeemed for a small prize—thanks to our generous partnerships with local businesses,” the department announced. “Think of it as a thank-you for staying safe!”

The initiative highlights the importance of helmet use, especially as faster e-bikes and scooters become more common. According to the New York State Department of Health, helmets reduce the risk of traumatic brain injury by up to 88 percent. State law also requires all children under 14 to wear a helmet while using wheeled devices.

To launch the campaign, Little Italy will be offering free slushies to participating children next week.

Police are encouraging youth to “strap on those helmets” for both safety and a chance at a fun reward. “Let’s make this summer safe and fun!” the department added.
