Renovations at the Finger Lakes SPCA in Auburn hit a bump after asbestos was discovered in the facility’s flooring, according to The Citizen. The cancer-causing material was found in tiles during lobby demolition, prompting a $22,000 abatement effort.
Despite the setback, the project remains on schedule for August completion. The SPCA is upgrading kennels, adding a clinic and quarantine areas, and improving HVAC systems to meet upcoming state animal care standards.
Most of the $600,000-plus project is covered by state grants and private donations, and shelter leadership says the asbestos issue hasn’t disrupted overall progress.
