NYSEG and RG&E urge action as unpaid utility bills soar

RG&E and NYSEG are calling on customers with overdue accounts to seek assistance as utility arrears climb into the hundreds of millions of dollars.

As of last year, unpaid balances reached $103 million for NYSEG and $100 million for RG&E. The companies stress that while they do not control or profit from energy supply prices, the cost of unpaid bills is ultimately shared by all customers.

“Taking care of our customers is at the heart of what we do,” said Christine Alexander, vice president of Customer Service at NYSEG and RG&E. “We understand that people are facing difficult times and we want our neighbors to know we’re here to help.”

The companies offer several programs to assist struggling households, including:

  • Energy Assistance Program (EAP): Monthly bill credits for income-qualified customers
  • Budget Billing: Equalized monthly payments based on prior usage
  • Deferred Payment Agreements: Customized payment plans for overdue balances

With winter shutoff protections lifted in April, disconnections have resumed. However, officials emphasized that shutoffs occur only after multiple contact attempts, including written notices, phone calls, and a final in-person visit.

Customers in need of help are encouraged to visit nyseg.com/HelpWithBill or rge.com/HelpWithBill, or call NYSEG at 800-72-1111 and RG&E at 800-743-2110.
