New York has fined Onondaga County $10,000 after untreated sewage backed up through manholes at two Solvay industrial sites, according to Syracuse.com. The state also ordered the county to fund a $40,000 project to reduce sediment pollution in Onondaga Creek and Lake.
The violations are linked to a 42-inch Ley Creek sewage pipe that has leaked 90 million gallons of diluted sewage into Onondaga Lake over four years. The pipe, which runs near railroad tracks at the creek’s mouth, has long been a concern for environmental officials.
The DEC’s penalties aim to prevent further damage to the lake’s water quality and hold local authorities accountable.
