Mid-State prison chief replaced amid inmate death lawsuit

New York’s Department of Corrections quietly removed the superintendent of Mid-State Correctional Facility last month, according to Spectrum News. The move came shortly before a federal lawsuit alleged that the former chief, Bryan Hilton, and others failed to prevent systemic abuse that led to an inmate’s death.

Hilton was replaced by Thomas Delmar of Auburn Correctional Facility on May 12. He now works as a social worker at a different prison. The lawsuit, filed on behalf of 22-year-old Messiah Nantwi, accuses correction officers of beating him fatally in March. One officer has pleaded guilty to related charges, while others face ongoing prosecution.

The suit claims Hilton, Commissioner Daniel Martuscello, and other staff ignored widespread abuse and outlines broader failures at the prison.
