Canadian homebuyers retreat from U.S. amid trade tensions

Rising political tensions and talk of annexation are pushing Canadian buyers away from the U.S. housing market, according to USA TODAY. Canadians, once the largest group of foreign property buyers in the U.S., are now backing off as real estate demand weakens nationwide.

The shift is especially visible in Arizona and Florida, where second-home listings by Canadians have surged. Data from Realtor.com shows Canadian interest has dropped significantly from last year. Experts blame not just political rhetoric, but also unfavorable exchange rates and high property prices.

Economists warn Canada may be sliding into a tariff-driven recession, reducing consumer confidence and spending. Combined with a perceived decline in U.S. hospitality, the pullback may deepen the U.S. market’s ongoing slowdown.
