Tree planted in Canandaigua honors tortured man

A foggy sky loomed over Lakefront Park as community members gathered to plant a Golden Weeping Willow in memory of Sam Nordquist, according to the Democrat and Chronicle. Nordquist, 24, had traveled to New York from Minnesota seeking love but was allegedly tortured and killed. Seven people now face charges in connection with his death.

Geneva residents Rebecca Mearns and Patricia Tillotson led the memorial effort, hoping to create a comforting space for Nordquist’s family. A planned dove release was postponed due to weather, now rescheduled for June 20.

Although none of the attendees had known Nordquist personally, many have continued showing up at vigils and court hearings. They say they feel called to carry his legacy forward with love, just as he had done in life.
