IRS sends final tax refunds for 2025: What to do if yours is delayed

The IRS is now sending out the final round of tax refunds for the 2025 filing season. As of June 4, millions of taxpayers have received their refunds, but a growing number are reporting unexpected delays — some lasting more than a month past the standard 21-day processing window.

Refunds still pending for thousands of filers

Although the IRS aimed to complete most refund distributions by late May, a backlog of flagged returns, manual reviews, and identity verification cases has extended refund timelines for many.

Common reasons for refund delays:

  • Errors in income reporting or tax credits
  • Incomplete identity verification
  • Amended returns or paper-filed returns
  • PATH Act holds for early filers claiming the EITC or ACTC

Some taxpayers also report pending status updates in the Where’s My Refund? tool for several weeks, especially for returns that required manual review.

How to check your refund status

The IRS recommends using the “Where’s My Refund?” tool on IRS.gov, updated once every 24 hours. You’ll need:

  • Your Social Security number (or ITIN)
  • Filing status
  • Exact refund amount

If your return has passed the 21-day window for e-filers or six weeks for paper filers, and no update has appeared, the IRS advises calling the main helpline at 800-829-1040.

What to do if your refund is delayed

If your refund still hasn’t arrived, here’s what you can do next:

  • Verify identity if prompted by IRS letter 5071C or 4883C
  • Check transcript online for return code activity
  • Contact the Taxpayer Advocate Service if you’ve waited more than 60 days
  • Review your tax software account for filing confirmation and IRS acceptance

Refunds requiring identity verification or correction may take up to 120 days to complete.

What the IRS says about remaining delays

In a June statement, the IRS noted:

“The majority of timely filed tax returns have been processed and refunded. Delays may still occur for returns requiring additional review, identity verification, or adjustments.”

Taxpayers will continue to receive direct deposit or mailed checks throughout June. If a refund hasn’t arrived by mid-July, additional follow-up may be necessary.
