Van rolls over on Thruway with 12 children inside

A van carrying more than a dozen people, including 12 children, flipped over Saturday afternoon on the New York State Thruway in Orange County, leaving multiple injured.

State Police said the crash occurred around 3:40 p.m. on May 31 in the southbound lanes of I-87, just south of Exit 17 in the town of New Windsor. The 2014 Chevrolet Express van struck the rear of a slowing 2026 Subaru Outback, triggering a rollover that blocked the left-hand lane.

The van was carrying 16 people — a driver, a front-seat passenger, and 14 others, including children aged one to 12. The Subaru spun onto the right shoulder and hit a signpost after the impact.

Emergency crews from the New Windsor Fire Department had to extricate the van’s front passenger, a woman, who was airlifted to Westchester Medical Center with injuries that were not life-threatening.

The driver and four children from the van were treated at Garnet Health Medical Center. Other injured passengers were taken to St. Luke’s Hospital. The Subaru’s driver was also treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Garnet Health.

Troopers issued tickets to the van’s driver for failing to properly restrain five of the children inside the vehicle.
