Most lights inside the shuttered Cayuga County Office Building have finally been turned off, according to The Citizen. The building, closed since May 2024 due to vermiculite contamination, had remained lit at night, drawing criticism from residents and lawmakers.
Legislature Chairman Jonathan Anna said some lights remain on because decontamination chambers block access to key panels. He personally turned off what he could after a vendor failed to act. Emergency lighting and certain breakers remain active for safety.
Though exact savings are unclear, officials reported a significant drop in utility use since the shutoff.
