Onondaga jail lieutenant demoted over inmate conduct

A lieutenant at the Onondaga County Correctional Facility was demoted after an internal probe revealed he attempted to form an inappropriate relationship with a female inmate, according to Syracuse.com. The officer, John P. Moltz, was reassigned and suspended without pay.

From February to March, Moltz allowed the woman into unmonitored areas, exposed a tattoo, and engaged in explicit conversations. He also requested time off on her release date. No physical contact was confirmed, and both parties denied such conduct during interviews.

Under a settlement, Moltz is barred from any contact with current or former female inmates and will be fired if he violates the agreement. He had earned $120,000 in 2024 and served with the sheriff’s office for 20 years.
