Lawler pushes for SALT cap relief in federal talks

New York Rep. Mike Lawler is calling for major changes to the federal cap on state and local tax (SALT) deductions, saying it’s hurt New Yorkers disproportionately, according to Spectrum News.

He and other New York Republicans, including Reps. Nick LaLota and Andrew Garbarino, want the cap raised to $40,000 for some taxpayers—up from the current $10,000 limit—during federal budget negotiations. Lawler said this would ease the burden on middle-class families in high-tax areas.

While some conservatives oppose the plan over debt concerns, Lawler argued it would help those “crushed” by New York’s taxes. The current SALT cap, enacted under Trump in 2017, is set to expire at year’s end.
