Schools may get more time on electric bus switch

As New York pushes for zero-emission school buses by 2035, many districts are struggling to meet the mandate, according to CNY Central.

Though the law requires voter approval for bus purchases, some districts—like Central Square—say the technology and infrastructure aren’t ready. The state has responded with two possible waivers, each offering two years of delay if districts meet certain criteria, including fleet planning and funding efforts.

While some lawmakers want more flexibility or opt-out options, others stress the environmental benefits of switching to electric. The state’s education department and energy authority continue working with districts to ease the transition and extend support where needed.
