Ithaca officials are considering a five-year freeze on expanding historic districts, citing concerns over housing access and regulatory burdens, according to The Ithaca Voice. The proposal, introduced by Alderperson Clyde Lederman, would halt new district creation until the city updates its Comprehensive Plan.
Lederman argues preservation rules hinder homeowners and slow development, especially during a housing crisis. Others, including planning staff, counter that historic districts support the city’s character and most minor projects are swiftly approved without major hurdles.
The Common Council tabled the proposal to gather data on preservation’s impact. Further discussion will resume once the Planning Department responds to council questions.
