A tornado warning and severe weather alert have been issued across parts of the Plains and Midwest, as an intensifying storm system threatens to deliver destructive winds, large hail, flash flooding, and possible tornadoes through Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service, conditions are ripe for rotating storms and supercells that could produce tornadoes across portions of Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, and Michigan. The active pattern comes as a powerful upper-level disturbance sweeps across the central U.S., clashing with warm, unstable air from the south.
Widespread Risk Across Plains and Midwest
The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) placed much of the central U.S. under a Level 3 out of 5 (enhanced) risk for severe thunderstorms on Wednesday and Thursday. Forecasters expect:
- Damaging straight-line winds in excess of 70 mph
- Large hailstones potentially exceeding 2 inches in diameter
- Isolated tornadoes, especially in eastern Nebraska, western Iowa, and central Illinois
- Flash flooding, particularly in low-lying and urban areas

In West Michigan, residents and visitors are being urged to take precautions as the severe weather system pushes into the region late Wednesday into Thursday. The National Weather Service in Grand Rapids said strong winds and hail are the biggest threats, though a tornado cannot be ruled out.
Campgrounds along the Lake Michigan shoreline are preparing for the worst. Park rangers have warned campers to monitor weather updates and seek shelter if alerts are issued. Several beaches may temporarily close due to the storm’s arrival.
“We’re seeing an unusually volatile setup,” said a local emergency official in Ottawa County. “This is not just a rainstorm — people need to take these tornado warnings seriously and plan accordingly.”
