Floods damage Steuben County roads as leader pleads for aid

  • Staff Report

Steuben County roadways were heavily damaged after heavy rain washed out streams and ditches across towns like Canisteo and Hornellsville, according to the Hornell Evening Tribune. Road crews are scrambling to clear debris and repair infrastructure, while County Road 14 remains closed.

The Canisteo River and other local waterways rose to minor flood stages, causing tens of thousands of dollars in damages but falling short of the devastation seen during Tropical Storm Debby last August. Officials warn more rain could worsen conditions and urge drivers to remain cautious.

County Legislature Chair Kelly Fitzpatrick called for immediate state and federal help, saying repeated disasters have overwhelmed local resources. She vowed Steuben County will not stand alone in seeking lasting solutions.
