Three Cayuga County villages have been selected to pursue official designation as Empire State Trail Towns, marking a major step toward growing outdoor recreation tourism and boosting local economies.
The Cayuga County Office of Tourism announced that Montezuma, Port Byron, and Weedsport will begin the application process through the Parks & Trails New York program, funded by the New York State Canal Corporation. Located along a scenic 12-mile stretch of the Empire State Trail near the historic Erie Canal, the villages were recognized for their strong heritage, hospitality, and commitment to trail users.
“This pursuit reflects our commitment to advocating for Cayuga County’s smaller communities as vibrant, welcoming destinations,” said Karen Kühl, Executive Director of the Cayuga County Office of Tourism. “We’re amplifying the voices of our residents and ensuring the benefits of the Empire State Trail are shared by all.”
Over the next ten months, each community will receive planning support, participate in public workshops, and strengthen local partnerships aimed at enhancing trail-friendly infrastructure. The program will help identify trail-accessible businesses, improve signage and amenities, and create a shared vision to attract hikers, cyclists, and history enthusiasts.
Trail users already enjoy attractions like the Old Erie Canal Heritage Park and the Richmond Aqueduct, as well as a variety of local cafés, breweries, and accommodations. The Trail Town designation will further solidify the area’s reputation as a top destination along one of the nation’s premier multi-use trails.
The Trail Town program is part of a broader statewide effort to support New York’s growing trail economy and recognize communities that actively engage with the Empire State Trail, which was completed in 2020.
