Penn Yan Police arrested a local man Thursday evening following an investigation into a possible explosive device detonation on East Elm Street.
At approximately 8:20 p.m., officers and several residents reported hearing a loud explosion in the area. Officers found ball bearings scattered near the scene and debris that had struck nearby houses.
While investigating, officers were approached by Damon R. Walker, 33, who told them the noise was from a firecracker and insisted they leave. Walker was detained after officers found him in possession of two 12-gauge shotgun shells. Officers also located remnants of what appeared to be a homemade explosive device.
Police allege that after being taken to the Penn Yan Police Department, Walker obstructed and physically resisted officers during the arrest process. He also allegedly caused damage to the department’s interior.
Walker was charged with Criminal Mischief in the 4th degree and Obstructing Governmental Administration in the 2nd degree. He was released on an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear in Penn Yan Court at a later date. Additional charges may follow pending lab results from the collected evidence.
