New York targets drivers violating work zones

New York is tightening its crackdown on work zone violations after a spike in accidents and assaults against highway workers, according to the Department of Transportation. In 2024 alone, 322 work zone intrusions led to two driver deaths and 138 injuries, while incidents of harassment against workers have also climbed.

To combat this, the state expanded its Move Over law and strengthened enforcement with radar and cameras, successfully reducing injuries where technology is deployed. Governor Kathy Hochul urged drivers to slow down and stay alert, as Operation Hard Hat issued 69 tickets in just four hours on Interstate 81.

Drivers caught speeding in work zones face doubled fines and risk license suspension for multiple offenses, as officials continue efforts to protect roadside crews.
