Aldi to open 800 new stores by 2028: 40 already open in 2025

Aldi, the budget-friendly grocery giant often compared to Publix, is embarking on its biggest U.S. expansion yet.

The retailer plans to open 800 new stores nationwide by 2028, with more than 40 already welcoming shoppers in 2025.

Aldi’s historic growth plan

According to USA Today, Aldi’s expansion will include more than 255 new store openings in 2025 alone—the most it has ever launched in a single year during its nearly 50-year history in the U.S.

At the end of 2024, Aldi had grown to over 2,400 locations, securing its spot as the third-largest grocery chain in America.

In 2025, Aldi is focusing heavily on increasing its footprint in the Northeast, Midwest, and Western U.S., including opening its first stores in Las Vegas.

Where new Aldi stores are already open

Here are some of the locations where Aldi has launched new stores so far in 2025:

  • Waverly, Iowa: 2701 4th Street SW
  • Metairie, Louisiana: 5901 Airline Drive
  • Auburn, Alabama: 1617 South College St.
  • Fulton, Missouri: 1503 North Bluff St.
  • Garfield Heights, Ohio: 12782 Rockside Road
  • Bessemer, Alabama: 2910 Morgan Road
  • Springfield, New Jersey: 240 US Route 22 West
  • Antigo, Wisconsin: 2019 Neva Road
  • Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania: 401 Penn Ave
  • Panama City Beach, Florida: 23200 Front Beach Road
  • North Las Vegas, Nevada: 2016 W. Craig Road
  • Henderson, Nevada: 621 Marks St.
  • Apollo Beach, Florida: 252 Harbor Village Lane
  • Tampa, Florida: 2100 W. Swann Ave.

More locations are expected to open throughout the summer and fall.

Store conversions fueling expansion

Part of Aldi’s rapid growth comes from its acquisition of Southeastern Grocers locations.

The company plans to convert about 220 Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket stores into Aldi stores by 2027.

However, not all acquisitions went as planned. In early 2025, Aldi announced it would sell roughly 170 unconverted store locations to a consortium involving C&S Wholesale Grocers and other private investors.

Aldi’s expansion outlook

Aldi’s aggressive growth strategy positions it to continue offering affordable groceries in more communities across the country.

With inflation squeezing household budgets, Aldi’s no-frills, low-cost model remains attractive to millions of shoppers looking to save on everyday essentials.
