Even though New York’s state budget is three weeks overdue, state employees continue to get paid. Lawmakers have kept paychecks flowing by repeatedly passing temporary budget extenders.
Gov. Kathy Hochul reaffirmed her commitment to a strong final budget during a Rochester visit but stressed she won’t sign a deal that doesn’t prioritize New Yorkers. Another extender will be needed if no agreement is reached by the weekend.
The original budget deadline was April 1, and negotiations are still ongoing as lawmakers work to avoid a payroll disruption.
