Several major housing measures remain unsettled in New York’s ongoing budget talks, according to Spectrum News. Gov. Kathy Hochul has promoted a partial deal that includes $50 million for a new housing voucher pilot, despite lawmakers pushing for five times that amount.
Assembly Housing Chair Linda Rosenthal and Senate Housing Chair Brian Kavanagh voiced frustration, saying the smaller pilot will only help about 2,000 households, far short of the 20,000 originally planned. Rosenthal said convincing Hochul to support long-term housing programs remains a battle.
Lawmakers insist more investment is needed for public housing repairs and foreclosure prevention as eviction rates climb statewide. While some progress is being made, they acknowledge final budget talks could stretch on for days.
