Cayuga County is highlighting the vital role of the travel industry in local and national economic growth as part of National Travel and Tourism Week, celebrated May 4-10. The travel sector continues to drive prosperity, supporting jobs, businesses, and community development across the nation.
“Travel is one of our nation’s most powerful economic engines—supporting millions of jobs, fueling businesses and propelling industries forward,” said Geoff Freeman, U.S. Travel Association President and CEO. National Travel and Tourism Week has showcased the power of travel since its founding in 1983.
In 2024, travel generated $2.9 trillion in economic output nationally, supported more than 15 million jobs, and produced $190 billion in tax revenue. Locally, Cayuga County’s tourism industry generates $157 million annually and supports over 1,500 jobs.
On May 7, Cayuga County will celebrate tourism’s contributions with an event at the Emerson Park Pavilion. The program will feature a “State of Tourism” address and a panel discussion with leaders from economic development, the chamber of commerce, planning, and tourism sectors. The event also marks the 30th anniversary of Tour Cayuga.
“Travel drives economic opportunity and strengthens our community,” said Karen Kühl, Cayuga County Director of Tourism. “This National Travel and Tourism Week, we celebrate travel’s undeniable impact and reaffirm its importance in shaping our local economy and the quality of life of our residents.”
