Social Security warns: Update to Login.gov or risk losing payments

A surreal digital illustration showing a lone figure standing at the base of cracked stone stairs leading to a giant padlock labeled 'LOGIN.GOV,' with a floating, weathered Social Security card nearby, set against a cloudy, parchment-colored sky.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) has issued an urgent warning: beneficiaries who fail to update their accounts to Login.gov could lose access to their payments.

Starting in May 2025, the SSA will suspend benefits for users who do not complete the mandatory switch. This move is part of a broader federal push to strengthen online security and streamline access to public services.

Why Social Security is requiring Login.gov

The SSA now requires anyone who created a My Social Security account before September 18, 2021, to transition to Login.gov. This new platform provides a single, secure login for multiple government services.

The update aims to:

  • Strengthen protection against identity theft and cyberattacks
  • Reduce online service wait times, currently averaging 36 minutes
  • Unify access to federal services with one set of credentials

Failure to complete the transition will result in account deactivation, locking users out of critical services like:

  • Viewing or managing monthly payments
  • Requesting replacement Social Security cards
  • Estimating future benefits
  • Updating personal information
  • Checking application status

Most importantly, missing the deadline could cause Social Security payments to be suspended until users update their accounts.

Who needs to update their account?

You must complete the switch if:

  • You created a My Social Security account before September 18, 2021
  • You have not yet linked your account with Login.gov
  • You received a notification from the SSA about the required change

How to update your Social Security account

Beneficiaries can update their accounts by following these steps:

  1. Visit ssa.gov
  2. Select the option to sign in or link your account with Login.gov
  3. Create new Login.gov credentials or connect your existing Social Security account
  4. Verify your identity using approved documents
  5. Watch for a confirmation email from a “.gov” domain
  6. Log in again to confirm successful account migration

The SSA urges users to avoid phishing scams by ensuring all websites start with “https://” and come from official government domains.

Final April payment reminder

The SSA also confirmed that the final Social Security payment for April will be issued on Wednesday, April 23. This payment covers retirees and beneficiaries born between the 21st and 31st of any month.

Beneficiaries should confirm their account access now to avoid missing upcoming payments during the Login.gov migration.
