DOJ sues Rochester over sanctuary city policy

  • / Updated:
  • Staff Report

The U.S. Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against Rochester, claiming its sanctuary city policies violate the Constitution’s supremacy clause, according to Spectrum News. The suit follows a March incident where city police assisted federal agents during a traffic stop, leading to an immigration-related arrest.

Mayor Malik Evans defended Rochester’s longstanding sanctuary policy, calling the lawsuit a federal distraction. The city’s rules, reaffirmed in 2017, restrict police and employee involvement in enforcing federal immigration laws unless tied to criminal investigations.

The DOJ seeks an injunction to halt these protections, while Rochester leaders vow to fight the challenge in court.
