Ontario County offers free lifeguard training to teens

  • Staff Report

Ontario County has launched a summer hiring initiative that removes the financial burden of lifeguard training for young job seekers.

The county announced on April 23 that it will reimburse certification costs for teens and young adults hired as lifeguards at municipal pools and beaches. The effort is funded through New York’s SWIMS (Statewide Investment in More Swimming) program and applies to facilities including Deep Run Park, Onanda Park, Kershaw Park, Sandy Bottom Park, and recreation programs in the Town of Victor and Village of Naples.

“Lifeguarding is a rewarding summer job that builds confidence, leadership, and lifesaving skills,” said Bill Wright, Commissioner of the Ontario County Department of Public Works. “We know the cost of certification and training can be a hurdle for teens and families, and that’s why Ontario County is stepping in to help.”

Openings include Lifeguard, Senior Lifeguard, and Aquatics Supervisor positions. Applicants must be at least 15 years old and have valid CPR and lifeguard certifications at the time of hire. Listings are available at https://ontario-portal.mycivilservice.com/jobopps.
