The City of Ithaca is calling on residents with a passion for civic service to apply for open seats on two of its key advisory boards: the Community Police Board and the Ethics Advisory Board.
Officials are encouraging applicants who want to help Ithaca remain “innovative, diverse, economically viable, safe, and beautiful” to step forward and lend their voices to local governance. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis through the city’s OpenGov platform.
“These volunteer roles are crucial to the way our city functions,” said Mayor Robert G. Cantelmo. “The city greatly values the volunteers who step up to participate in our local governance. Residents who share their time, energy, and thoughtful advice are integral to the betterment of our community.”
The Community Police Board acts as a liaison between the community and police department, promoting communication and trust. Commissioners are selected to reflect the cultural and economic diversity of the city, and geographic representation is also considered. The board meets monthly on the fourth Wednesday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at City Hall.
The Ethics Advisory Board is tasked with reviewing financial disclosures, conducting investigations into ethics complaints, and issuing advisory opinions under the city’s Code of Ethics. Members are chosen based on independence, civic commitment, integrity, and ethical standards rather than specific credentials.
To apply, interested residents must create a free account on the City’s OpenGov portal and complete a short questionnaire. Applicants may also upload resumes or relevant documents. Appointments are made by the mayor and require Common Council approval.
