Geneva launches expanded recycling and trash program

  • Staff Report

A new recycling and trash program at the Geneva Resource Recovery Park will launch on May 1, offering expanded services and stricter guidelines to promote sustainability and reduce landfill waste.

The City and Town of Geneva are jointly rolling out the initiative, which applies to all residential users of the facility. The program includes a new pricing structure and clearer rules for sorting materials, according to officials.

The facility, located at the Resource Recovery Park, will operate on Thursdays and Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. To use the site, residents must purchase an annual sticker for $20 per vehicle. A $75 punch card is required for trash disposal, with two bags per punch.

Stickers and punch cards are available at City Hall for city residents and at the Town Hall Clerk’s Office for town residents.

Only household waste is accepted—no commercial or business waste. Items must be sorted into designated bins: the blue compactor for general trash, the blue roll-off for recyclables, the red roll-off for scrap metal, green totes for food waste, and concrete bins for yard debris.

Accepted recycling includes clean glass bottles, cans, plastics labeled #1–#7, cardboard, and paper products. Trash must be in 30-gallon sealed bags and may include items like Styrofoam, plastic wrap, and dirty paper products. Yard waste must be loose or in paper bags, not plastic.

The city encourages residents to reduce landfill impact by using composting options. Food scraps, including meat and dairy, can be dropped off in green totes. Backyard composting kits are also available by request.

Hazardous materials, electronics, furniture, and construction debris are not accepted at the park. Ontario County hosts separate hazardous waste events throughout the year. Illegal dumping and removal of materials from containers will result in prosecution.

For questions or to report suspicious activity, residents can contact the City Clerk at 315-789-2603 or the Town Clerk at 315-789-3922.
