Feds Threaten NYC Over Congestion Toll Plan

The federal government has given New York until May 21 to either halt its congestion pricing program or prove it complies with federal law. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warned Governor Kathy Hochul that the state risks losing federal transportation funds if it fails to act.

Governor Hochul defended the toll system, insisting it is legal and effective, noting reduced traffic and a boost to local business. The MTA and its chair, Janno Lieber, echoed her stance, stating the issue is already before a federal judge and the toll cameras will remain active.

The tolls, which began in January, aim to ease congestion and raise funds for transit. Most drivers pay $9 during peak hours to enter Manhattan below Central Park.
